In a country where the people are mainly divided into supporters of Sunni Hanafi and Shia Jafari religions, and the previous constitution recognized both religions and Ashura was a legal and public holiday, they adopted measures that instead of the coexistence of the two religions, the Sunni Hanafi religion declared it as the only official religion of the country and removed Ashura from the official calendar of the country.
